COMMON QUESTIONS

Things people often ask us

Do I need to be an OT to take Responsive Therapy courses?

Not at all. While Responsive Therapy was initially developed within occupational therapy and remains AOTA-approved, the certification is open to all pediatric therapists — OTs, SLPs, PTs, play therapists, mental health clinicians, early intervention specialists, and more. The relational principles at the heart of RT belong to every discipline.

Is Responsive Therapy compatible with how I already practice?

If you work from a neuroaffirming, relationship-centered perspective, you'll find RT deeply resonant. RT does not incorporate behavioral modification or ABA-based approaches. If you're currently using those frameworks, we invite you to explore whether this represents a direction you want to grow in.

What's the difference between taking Explorations and earning the certification?

Explorations (Level I) is a continuing education course — meaningful, substantive, and AOTA-approved — that introduces the principles of RT. The certification itself is earned through Reflections (Level II), which involves a structured video-based assessment reviewed by three Responsive Therapists. Explorations is the prerequisite for Reflections.

Can I bring Responsive Therapy training to my organization or school district?

Yes, and we love those conversations. If you're interested in bringing Explorations or a customized RT training to your team, reach out through the form above and let us know a little about your context. We'll be in touch to explore what makes sense.

What if I don't pass the Reflections video assessment?

The process of reviewing your own session — and receiving thoughtful, relational feedback from three Responsive Therapists — is itself a profound part of the experience. If additional reflection is needed before certification is awarded, you'll receive specific, supportive guidance on what to develop. About 80% of participants pass on their first submission. The other 20% are still doing important work.

How do I know if Fellowship is right for me?

Fellowship is for therapists who have completed Reflections and feel drawn to guiding others — not because they have all the answers, but because they care deeply about this work continuing to grow. If that resonates, we'd love to talk. It's a nine-month commitment that changes the way you see your role in this profession.
