About Responsive Therapy
Responsive Therapy® came out of practice. Founder, Heather, spent twenty years as a pediatric occupational therapist in Maryland and Washington, D.C., working with children, families, schools, providers, educators, and administrators — more than a thousand people across two decades at Young & Well. The model didn't start with a theory. It started with what she kept noticing in the room.
The question was never whether the children needed something different. It was whether the adults around them did.
For years, Heather pursued continuing education looking for frameworks that matched what she was seeing in her practice. What she found, consistently, was content built around behavior — what the child was doing, how to change it. The child was the focus. The adult in the room— and how they spoke to the child, both in the language they used and the way they said the words they chose— was barely a consideration.
But in Heather's experience, the adult was never a neutral presence.
A clinician's own state in a session, what they noticed, what they missed, how they responded when things got hard — that shaped what was actually possible far more than any technique did. Most trainings never touched it.
That gap is where Responsive Therapy began.
What was missing wasn't more strategies. It was a training model willing to look honestly at the therapist, and to treat the clinician's awareness and regulation as the place where meaningful work either starts or doesn't.
